WHAT IS 494 MAGAZINE

494 MAGAZINE IS A STUDENT-RUN FASHION MAGAZINE AND THE FIRST ORGANIZATION OF ITS KIND AT GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY. INITIALLY FOUNDED BY 12 FRIENDS WHO SHARED A PASSION FOR FASHION, IT HAS GROWN INTO A THRIVING PLATFORM FOR CREATIVES ACROSS CAMPUS. AS VICE PRESIDENT AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR, I’VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF HELPING TRANSFORM 494 MAGAZINE INTO AN ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS AND BUILD THEIR PORTFOLIOS. ​ OUR MAGAZINE FOCUSES ON REAL-WORLD TOPICS, ART, MUSIC, AND CREATIVITY, GIVING VOICE TO DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES AND TALENTS. IT IS A COLLABORATIVE SPACE FOR JOURNALISTS, MARKETERS, ADVERTISING AND PR MAJORS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, FILMMAKERS, GRAPHIC DESIGNERS, MODELS, STYLISTS, AND MORE. AT ITS CORE, 494 MAGAZINE IS NOT JUST A PUBLICATION—IT’S A COMMUNITY THAT EMPOWERS STUDENTS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES, DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS, AND PREPARE FOR THEIR FUTURE CAREERS. ​ WHAT SETS 494 MAGAZINE APART IS ITS COMMITMENT TO INCLUSIVITY AND AUTHENTICITY. WE BELIEVE FASHION IS MORE THAN JUST TRENDS; IT REFLECTS IDENTITY, CULTURE, AND PERSONAL EXPRESSION. THROUGH BOLD EDITORIALS, THOUGHT-PROVOKING ARTICLES, AND DYNAMIC VISUALS, WE CHALLENGE CONVENTIONAL NARRATIVES AND CELEBRATE INDIVIDUALITY. OUR PROJECTS ARE DRIVEN BY STUDENT-LED CREATIVITY, GIVING OUR MEMBERS THE FREEDOM TO EXPERIMENT, INNOVATE, AND PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF TRADITIONAL MEDIA. ​ BEYOND THE MAGAZINE PAGES, 494 FOSTERS LEADERSHIP, PROFESSIONAL GROWTH, AND REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE. WE HOST WORKSHOPS, NETWORKING EVENTS, AND COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS THAT CONNECT STUDENTS WITH INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS, HELPING BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN ACADEMIC LIFE AND THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES. EACH ISSUE WE PRODUCE IS NOT JUST A COLLECTION OF CONTENT—IT’S A TESTAMENT TO THE HARD WORK, PASSION, AND VISION OF EVERY MEMBER INVOLVED. ​ IT’S A PROJECT I AM DEEPLY PROUD OF AND ONE THAT ALIGNS WITH MY VISION OF INSPIRING AND SUPPORTING CREATIVITY IN OTHERS. BEING PART OF 494 MAGAZINE HAS NOT ONLY ALLOWED ME TO GROW AS A CREATIVE DIRECTOR. STILL, IT HAS ALSO GIVEN ME THE CHANCE TO CONTRIBUTE TO A LEGACY OF ARTISTIC EXPLORATION AND STUDENT EMPOWERMENT AT GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY.

WHAT IS MY
ROLE IN 494?

AS VICE PRESIDENT, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, AND SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER OF 494 MAGAZINE, I PLAY A MULTIFACETED ROLE IN SHAPING THE MAGAZINE’S VISION, CONTENT, AND PRESENCE BOTH ON CAMPUS AND ONLINE. MY RESPONSIBILITIES SPAN CREATIVE DIRECTION, EDITORIAL LEADERSHIP, AND STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION, ALLOWING ME TO INFLUENCE EVERY STAGE OF THE MAGAZINE’S DEVELOPMENT. IN MY ROLE AS VICE PRESIDENT, I HELP OVERSEE THE ORGANIZATION’S OPERATIONS, ENSURING THAT OUR PROJECTS RUN SMOOTHLY AND ALIGN WITH OUR MISSION. I COLLABORATE CLOSELY WITH THE EXECUTIVE TEAM TO PLAN MEETINGS, COORDINATE EVENTS, AND FOSTER A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERY MEMBER FEELS VALUED AND INSPIRED TO CONTRIBUTE THEIR BEST WORK. AS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, I LEAD THE EDITORIAL PROCESS, CURATING CONTENT THAT REFLECTS OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITY AND PUSHES CREATIVE BOUNDARIES. I WORK WITH WRITERS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, AND DESIGNERS TO DEVELOP STORY IDEAS, REFINE CONCEPTS, AND MAINTAIN A COHESIVE AESTHETIC ACROSS ALL ISSUES. MY GOAL IS TO AMPLIFY AUTHENTIC VOICES AND CREATE THOUGHT-PROVOKING CONTENT THAT RESONATES WITH OUR AUDIENCE. IN MY ROLE AS SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER, I CRAFT THE MAGAZINE’S DIGITAL PRESENCE, USING PLATFORMS LIKE INSTAGRAM TO SHOWCASE OUR WORK, ENGAGE WITH OUR AUDIENCE, AND BUILD OUR BRAND IDENTITY. I DEVELOP CONTENT STRATEGIES, MANAGE POSTING SCHEDULES, AND ANALYZE ENGAGEMENT METRICS TO ENSURE OUR MESSAGE REACHES AND INSPIRES A BROAD AUDIENCE. TOGETHER, THESE ROLES ALLOW ME TO MERGE CREATIVITY WITH LEADERSHIP, DRIVING 494 MAGAZINE’S GROWTH WHILE SUPPORTING THE TALENTS OF OUR INCREDIBLE TEAM. IT’S A DYNAMIC, CHALLENGING, AND DEEPLY REWARDING EXPERIENCE THAT ALIGNS WITH MY PASSION FOR STORYTELLING, FASHION, AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION.
